NOVA Bound: Early List Building and Speculation

While NOVA is still a ways off, I have already begun the yearly debate on what I'm going to bring to NOVA. I'll also be competing in the Invitational again this year, so may opt for two different armies. I will have the Necrons to fall back on, and the list I brought to NRVCon is probably about the ideal list I would take.

The list I would potentially like to work toward is a Space Marine list of the Raven Guard variety. I have a couple variants that I'm considering, and that I have the bones of, though would need to add some things like Scouts.

The first list uses the Raven Guard Talon Strike Force with a regular Demi-Company as the core, and then the Shadowstrike Kill Team and an attached Skyhammer Annihilation Force:

  • Talon Strike Force:
    • Demi-Company:
      • Chaplain: Raven's Fury Jump Pack
      • Command Squad: 5 Veterans, Standard of the Emperor Ascendant, Drop Pod
      • 3x5 Tactical Marines: 2 Rhinos
      • Land Speeder: Multi-Melta
      • 5 Devastator Marines
    • Shadowstrike Kill Team:
      • 3x5 Scouts
      • 10 Vanguard Veterans: Powerfist and Lightning Claw on each
  • Skyhammer Annihilation Force: Ultramarine Chapter Tactics
    • 2x10 Assault Marines
    • 5 Devastators: Drop Pod, 2 Multi-Meltas
    • 5 Devastators: Drop Pod
The second force is very similar, but drops the Skyhammer to add more to the Shadowstrike Kill Team:

  • Talon Strike Force:
    • Demi-Company:
      • Chaplain: Raven's Fury Jump Pack
      • Command Squad: 5 Veterans w/Meltaguns, Standard of the Emperor Ascendant, Drop Pod
      • 3x5 Tactical Marines: 2 Rhinos
      • Land Speeder: Multi-Melta
      • 5 Devastator Marines
    • Shadowstrike Kill Team:
      • 5 Scouts: Veteran Sergeant w/Nihlus, Camo Cloaks, Sniper Rifles
      • 3x5 Scouts
      • 2x10 Vanguard Veterans: Powerfist and Lightning Claw on each
Both of these forces, or any changes, would need to be painted from scratch, though I do have many of the models either on sprue or assembled. So, that would boil down to, for list 1:
  • 76 Marine Bodies, 2 Tanks, 1 Small Vehicle:
    • Chaplain w/Jump Pack
    • 32 Bolter Marines
    • Standard Bearer
    • 2 Devastator Marines
    • 15 Scouts
    • 20 Jump Pack Marines
    • 10 Vanguard Veterans
    • Land Speeder
    • 2 Rhinos
For the second list, it's close to the same:
  • 66 Marine Bodies, 2 Tanks, 1 Small Vehicle:
    • Chaplain w/Jump Pack
    • 20 Bolter Marines
    • 5 Meltagun Marines including a Standard Bearer
    • 15 Bolter Scouts
    • 5 Sniper Scouts
    • 20 Vanguard Veterans
    • 2 Rhinos
    • Land Speeder
I'm currently leaning toward the second list as it packs a bit more punch I think. The general tactic for both lists is that it Alpha strikes extremely hard with 4-6 units that charge turn 1. List 1 will struggle to crack open vehicles in the Alpha strike, while List 2 has a few units to crack open important tanks/transports before the charge. Against Psychic deathstars I will want to go first to get charges in on the star before powers can come up, or force it to start off the board. Against most other armies I would likely opt to go second to allow me to counter deploy a bit more effectively.

Daemons present a bit of a problem for these lists overall, and countering null deployment from many players will be difficult. It will definitely take some practice with the list, but any thoughts from some people with more experience than I with Imperial armies?
