Facing the Grey Tide

To expand upon my intro post, I chose the name of the blog based on the problem I face that I believe is common to many wargamers in that I buy well beyond my ability to paint. While it had even been the case while growing up and having a severely limited budget, when I got back into the hobby last year with a much larger budget, it definitely got worse, particularly as I tried to update my armies for the new edition and codices.

As a way of motivating myself and holding myself accountable, I plan on doing a regular post on what I have in my lineup to paint and what I've completed since the previous post, as well as calling myself out on new purchases. I hope anyone reading these posts who feels like participating does so and tracks their own painting in the comments. I'd love to be able to do spotlights on other people's painting as well.

Anyway, to set a baseline, here is a rough list of things I need to assemble and paint sorted somewhat by priority within their category/army:

Tyranids:
Swarmlord
Broodlord and 22 Genestealers (though I'll probably only do about 5-10 in the first pass)
3 Hive Guard
18 Devilgants
16 Hormagaunts
3rd Edition Hive Tyrant + Wings
Trygon
Converted Mawloc
Zoanthrope
~60 Termagants

Orks:
Warboss (just needs basing and couple finishing touches)
Dakkajet (partially painted)
Painboy w/ Grot
5 Lootas
~50 Boyz
5 Nobz
2 Custom-built battlewagons
3 Killa Kans w/Rokkit Launchas

Dark Eldar:
Archon
10 Warriors
10 Wyches
25 Hellions
Venom
Raider
~30 Warriors (from 3rd ed)

Other Game Systems:
MERCS KemVar group (7 minis)
Warmachine - Protectorate of Menoth Starter set (Warcaster Kreoss + 3 Jacks)
Protectorate of Menoth Warjack Crusader
Protectorate of Menoth Warcaster Amon Ad Raza

Tau:
4 Crisis Suits
12 Firewarriors
16 Kroot
3 Stealth Suits
8 Pathfinders (metal)
Devilfish
2 Broadsides

Misc.:
Dark Vengeance Dark Angels Captain
Dark Vengeance Dark Angels Librarian
Terrain - Plastic Forests, Ruins, etc.

This list is by no means complete - I've left out all my Eldar, Necrons, and Space Marines, as well as anything from Fantasy, which includes well over 100 Skaven Clanrats and probably about 2,000 points of Dark Elves. In the Misc section, I will track terrain projects as well as any models I buy with the express intent of painting and then reselling on eBay - which is an excuse I use to buy but have rarely completed and am hoping to actually fulfill it some times.

I will leave with a question for you: What do you do to keep yourself motivated?

  1. Good stuff, I have around 20k points of unpainted orks and I also refer to them as the gray tide.

    1. Thanks for reading. Wow, 20k in Orks, that is definitely a lot of Boyz. Very impressive tide at that.

  2. I feel your pain. My unpainted list contains some playable but unfinished armies (Imperial Guard, Marines, Warriors of Chaos, Beasts of Chaos, Dwarfs) and a bunch of completely purchased, but unbuilt/unpainted/unplayable armies (Vampire Counts, Empire, Tyranids, Orks, Eldar and now - thanks to the "Warhammer Armies Project" - Nippon).

I only get to play twice per year - Summer and Winter - so my motivation is always "be ready for the next game, never field the same force twice" so I've always got to at least add a unit or two to an established army or get a new one off the ground. My next game breaks that rule a bit - it's a Siege so instead of changing my army I'm building siege towers, battering rams and painting a fortress.

    1. That's a really good idea, and good for you sticking to it. I get to play a little more often, though still not regularly, so a similar goal of having something new each time is definitely a good thing to aim for. Thanks for your input!
