Battle for Blacksburg Bat Rep - Game 1

We recently had our Battle for Blacksburg tournament and I got to play three great games against three great opponents. As often happens, while I had intentions of recording each turn to provide context for my battle reports, by round two I started forgetting, and by round three, only remembered to take a photo partway through the game.

My final list consisted of:
  • Hive Tyrant: Wings, 2 Twin-linked Devourers
  • Hive Tyrant: Wings, 2 Twin-linked Devourers
  • Zoanthrope
  • Venomthrope
  • Tervigon: Regeneration
  • 30 Termagants
  • Hive Crone
  • Hive Crone
  • Exocrine
  • Living Artillery Node Formation:
    • 3 Warriors: Barbed Strangler, Rending Claws (1)
    • Exocrine
    • 3 Biovores
  • Bastion

Game 1 was against Rick, a fellow local running Chaos Space Marines. The missions followed ATC format (30 total points available, 8 points for 3 primaries, 2 points for 3 secondaries) and game 1 was with Hammer and Anvil deployment, with Heavy Support counting as scoring and giving up 2 kill points. Rick's list had:
  • Typhus
  • Daemon Prince: Wings, Black Mace, 3+ Armor
  • 20 Plague Zombies
  • 20 Plague Zombies
  • ~8 Plague Marines
  • 5 Chaos Terminators: 2 combi meltas
  • Heldrake: Baleflamer
  • Heldrake: Hades Autocannon
  • Maulerfiend: 2 Lasher Tendrils
  • Chaos Land Raider
The three crusade objectives were placed one in each deployment zone, and one in the middle. We rolled for sides and I won, taking the left (in all the pictures). Emperor's will objectives were then placed in the opposite corners of the crusade objectives. I also placed my bastion to the left of my line, partially out of my zone and overlooking the middle Crusade objective.

Rick won the roll for first turn and opted to deploy first. He deployed his army about midway in his zone, weighted to my left with the Land Raider on that flank. The Terminators were inside, and the Plague Marines and Typhus walking next to it. The mauler fiend and daemon prince went in the middle and the zombies took up position on either flank on the objectives. I countered with a heavy left flank, putting the venomthrope in the bastion, the warriors and biovores behind, and the exocrines nearby. The crones and flyrants went centrally in my line, staying within 6" of the bastion, while the gants strung out along the line.

I attempted to seize but did not. In the top of the turn, Rick marched forward with the hard hitters, leaving the zombies behind. His landraider took shots at my bastion and managed a glance, but I saved the wound to my venomthrope. In my turn I kept my line fairly flat, staying just on my half of the board to avoid Heldrake vector strikes. The Flyrants dealt a couple wounds to the daemon prince, while the crones fired missiles at the land raider, causing two hull points. Finally, the biovores killed half a dozen zombies on the group in the bunker/ruin, inner walls protecting many of them.

In turn two both heldrakes arrived, going for either flank. The remainder of the army continued their advance while the daemon prince landed in front of the termagants. Shooting from the Hades autocannon took one crone down to a two wounds remaining while the land raider dealt a wound do an exocrine. In combat, the daemon prince killed several termagants, the black mace downing more, while taking no attacks in return.

In my turn, my warlord flyrant vector stuck the Autocannon heldrake and flew off the board. The crone on that side also vector struck the heldrake. On the other side, the other Crone vector struck the other Heldrake while the flyrant opted not to and landed behind the maulerfiend. The termagants positioned themselves to make a vector strike on the Exocrines, biovores, and tervigon nearly impossible, just in case. Vector strikes managed a locked velocity on the Baleflamer heldrake and took each down to a single hullpoint. Single missiles from each crone took out the autocannon drake, while the baleflamer survived. Gants ran around in my backfield to limit landing spots for it. The biovores bombed the cultists in the open while the flyrant destroyed the maulerfiend. Finally, the daemon prince continued to hack away at termagants.

In Rick's turn 3, the Land Raider continued its implacable advance and unloaded the terminators in front of the exocrines. Shooting took a couple wounds off the lead exocrine. The terminators then declared a charge, losing one of their number to overwatch, then rolling snake eyes for their distance, only needing a 4 or 5. On the other side, the black mace worked too well and killed every termagant within 3", forcing them out of combat.

In the bottom of the turn, the flyrant returned and made for the now open Daemon prince while the Crones made for the cultists, with the lead flyrant and one crone vector striking the plague marines. The exocrines combined fire to wipe out the terminators and the Zoanthrope used its warp lance to kill off the daemon prince.

In turn 4, with little left, Typhus and his remaining few marines made for and charged an exocrine, killing it at the cost of the remaining marines. In the bottom of the turn, the crones and flyrants positioned themselves to wipe out the cultists and land raider, but with it a forgone conclusion, we didn't roll it out and I took a 30-0 Victory.

Stay tuned for rounds 2 and 3!
